Brown bag lunches may need nutrient makeover

RSS icon HOUSTON -- (March 6, 2013) -- School cafeteria food has a come a long way in terms of nutrition, and now it's time for brown bag lunches to catch up. According to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine, lunches packed from home are often lacking in healthy options.
A recent study led by Dr. Craig Johnston, assistant professor at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, compared the foods in lunches brought from home versus those offered in theschool cafeteria.
"What is clear through the study is that the majority of kids with packed lunches are not bringing what we would consider a healthy lunch," Johnston said.
Many parents just want to make sure their children eat something during the school day, so they pack items they know their kids like, Johnston said.
"Parents are concerned that if they provide a fruit and vegetable, their kids won't eat it. But they might be surprised, because their kids are probably hungry and are likely to eat what's there," Johnston said.
Options for a healthy lunch packed from home include:
  • A vegetable such as cut-up carrots or celery
  • A fruit, either fresh or packed in juice or water
  • Dairy, such as milk, yogurt or cheese
  • A healthy drink, such as 100 percent juice, milk or water
  • Whole-grain bread
  • Protein from peanut butter, lean lunch meat, beans and nuts
"It's great news that national initiatives have resulted in healthy lunch options provided by theschool but parents should ensure their home lunches are packed with the same nutrients," Johnston said.

Taste Testing Fun!

Mrs. Bogel's 3rd grade classroom had the fun task today of taste testing new PB&J sandwiches for our county.  Here are pictures from the festivities:

The students enjoyed taking part in a taste test that could effect what all of the children in Forsyth County might eat next year!  They did a fabulous job and were very honest in their opinions of the food samples.

Thank you, Mrs. Vaughan (FNS Area Manager), for selecting our school for the Taste Test!
Thank you to Mrs. Bogel's class for being really good test-takers!

Breakfast - The Most Important Meal of the Day!

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day for kids, as it provides the necessary energy to get set for a day of learning and achievement.  Some of the benefits of eating school breakfast include:

Higher Academic Scores - studies have shown eating breakfast at school results in higher test scores.

Improved Behavior - Hungry children are more likely to have discipline problems.

Reduced Tardiness - Kids who eat school breakfast are late or absent from school less often.

Convenient and Value for Parents - School breakfast is ideal for busy families trying to get out the door quickly in the mornings, and is offered at a great price.

Health and Nutrition:
In early 2012, the USDA unveiled new nutrition standards for school meals (like breakfast) that prompted healthy changes in school cafeterias nationwide. Under the new standards, schools are: Offering more fruits and vegetables; increasing whole grain-rich foods; switching to fat-free or lowfat milk; limiting calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

We've Got NAC!!!!

Daves Creek Elementary School now has a NAC team!  NAC (Nutrition Advisory Council) teams are established to encourage students to have an active role in their School Nutrition Programs. Our team is composed of 4th and 5th grade boys and girls selected by their homeroom teachers to serve.

We had our first meeting in December and another in January.  Our meetings are during lunch time and the children and I have lunch together.  They love to share their thoughts and opinions, and have enjoyed taste testing new items we are trying in the cafeteria. The students are awesome, they are so excited to be a part of our progress and plans.  Currently we are working on plans for National School Breakfast Week!  Stay tuned as the plans start to come to life!
