Breakfast - The Most Important Meal of the Day!

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day for kids, as it provides the necessary energy to get set for a day of learning and achievement.  Some of the benefits of eating school breakfast include:

Higher Academic Scores - studies have shown eating breakfast at school results in higher test scores.

Improved Behavior - Hungry children are more likely to have discipline problems.

Reduced Tardiness - Kids who eat school breakfast are late or absent from school less often.

Convenient and Value for Parents - School breakfast is ideal for busy families trying to get out the door quickly in the mornings, and is offered at a great price.

Health and Nutrition:
In early 2012, the USDA unveiled new nutrition standards for school meals (like breakfast) that prompted healthy changes in school cafeterias nationwide. Under the new standards, schools are: Offering more fruits and vegetables; increasing whole grain-rich foods; switching to fat-free or lowfat milk; limiting calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

We've Got NAC!!!!

Daves Creek Elementary School now has a NAC team!  NAC (Nutrition Advisory Council) teams are established to encourage students to have an active role in their School Nutrition Programs. Our team is composed of 4th and 5th grade boys and girls selected by their homeroom teachers to serve.

We had our first meeting in December and another in January.  Our meetings are during lunch time and the children and I have lunch together.  They love to share their thoughts and opinions, and have enjoyed taste testing new items we are trying in the cafeteria. The students are awesome, they are so excited to be a part of our progress and plans.  Currently we are working on plans for National School Breakfast Week!  Stay tuned as the plans start to come to life!

Spa Water

A couple of years ago my husband (Chris) and I traveled to North Carolina for a much needed weekend of rest and relaxation.  We stayed at a popular spa resort and my favorite thing from the entire weekend was the FABULOUS SPA WATER they served there.  It tasted so fresh and so clean!

When I received my position as the Food and Nutrition Manager at Daves Creek, I knew I wanted to treat our teachers and staff to the same wonderful water.  Here are some of the recipes we use:

Flavored Water: 3 Ways recipe pictures

Water can be flavored with any combinations of fruit and herbs.  We have also used ruby red grapefruit and mint which was delicious.  Use any of the recipes above or google "Flavored Waters".  Enjoy the fresh treat!
